Why Does Everyone Hate Vuvuzelas?

Throughout the world cup I've seen tweets about "vuvuzelas" with the hashtag #worldcup.  Tweeters are complaining about how annoyed they are by "vuvuzelas" or how much they hate "vuvuzelas."  Today I decided to look up "vuvuzelas" on Wikipedia to see exactly who this "Vuvuzelas" guy is and what he's done during the World Cup that's made everyone so angry. I come to find out "vuvuzelas" is not a soccer player's last name, but instead those darn bee hive horns!

The vuvuzela (English pronunciation: /vu?vu??ze?l?/) , sometimes called a "lepatata" or a stadium horn, is a blowing horn up to approximately 1 m in length. It is commonly blown by fans at association football matches in South Africa. The instrument is played using a simple brass instrumenttechnique of blowing through compressed lips to create a buzz, and emits a loud monotone (B?3). A similar instrument is used by football fans in South America.

I know, I know. My bow is growing…

Invictus

Have you seen it? I watched it while I was working out last weekend and liked it so much I went home and downloaded the soundtrack. Randy hadn't seen it and I actually missed some of the lines by watching in on my i-phone so we watched it again Sunday night. The best part is that even though I watched the whole movie, I had no idea what the name Invictus came from. Handy Randy wikipedia'd it and found out it was the poem Mandela gives to the Rugby captain. The movie was incredible for many reasons but the three things I personally took from the movie were:

1. I now love the South Africa National Anthem. I find it totally inspiring. Shocking? no

2. New i-Phone App Idea: Crowd sounds to play behind workout music. There's something about the roar of the crowd and the music in the movie that made me work out harder. So I'm thinking we go to various stadiums and record the crowd cheering then let people mix it with their favorite songs and workout to not just music but the roaring crowd!

3. I also love the poem itself… especially the last two lines.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley (1849–1903)

Customer Service

So I'm taking on this new role at work where I'll be in charge of our customer experience and branding. The idea is that I'll be responsible for making sure we have great service. So as a part of that I listen to customer service calls from my desk. I can just listen in anytime and no one knows.

This afternoon I was listening and a guy called in because he was having trouble using his card at an ATM. The customer service rep set his pin and was on the phone with him as he attempted to use the ATM again. It was a fairly long call but in the end he got his money and was happy. In fact, the customer was so happy he asked to speak to the manager so he could sing the reps praises for staying on the phone with him. While the rep was getting his manager, the customer asked where he was.

The rep said he was in Atlanta and the conversation went something like this:
Rep: I'm in Atlanta
Customer: Hotlanta! You in Hotlanta! Hot Damn there are some hot jamaican chics in Hotlanta…
Rep: Oh yeah?
Customer: Yeah the Jamaicans are so hot and they treat you real good and give the nastiest tail you've ever had…
Customer: You know what I mean, I live in DC and the chics there are lame not like those Jamaicans
Customer: I'm repping DC, I'm reppin Philly, you know what I mean
Rep: While I would love to continue this conversation, these calls are recorded…

I was crying by the time the guy hung up.

Videos for Inspiration

Rollin' On The River

Possible plot line: The club is discussing summer vacation plans.  Rachel tells everyone about her family's river house and how they do a talent show each year. She holds the trophy for the past 15 years but a cousin and his adorable baby cowgirl gave her a run for her money last year. She invites the New Directions to come perform in the show with her so she will be sure to win. Mr Schuster thinks it would be a great bonding opportunity. Sue Sylvestor makes a joke about his hair. Brittany has a hilarious one liner.

Possible dance:  Have the canoe or john boat up on the stage and the background singers can sit in the boat and "sit dance" as part of the song. I'm envisioning rowing moves and some Tina Turner hair tossing/head banging.

If we need more actors, we could always recruit Dad and/or Donny…

Showtime at the River

We'll need an MC who says, "If you are you ready for your next act say OH YEAH."  The MC also needs to make sure everyone rubs the stump and asks some background questions.  Aunt Beth? Uncle Victor?

We'll need to plant some bad acts in there for everyone to boo.  I think Nathan would make a pretty good clown to clear off the bad acts.  Do you think Dad would resurrect Ugacha baby?  That is sure to get boo'd!

They call their kids segment the "starts of tomorrow."

Those are my scattered thoughts on the subject. Let me know what you think!
